One of the goals for the release of fine by ren was to only use gemstones we've collected over the years. We did not want to purchase any new gemstones as part of our commitment to sustainability in an industry where waste is rampant, particularly when we had such a beautiful collection at our disposal already. Montana Sapphires have slowly taking up residency in the safe as we (and many other jewelers) are naturally drawn to their unique charm and beautiful shades of blue and green.
Fine by ren was years in the making. It was the first real dive into crafting full sets of jewels in 14k gold alongside precious gemstones. The sapphires that have been collected over the years have been waiting for this opportunity. They have really been getting the appreciation that they deserve as of late. It's a popular choice for an alternative, non-traditional engagement ring or wedding band.
What Are Montana Sapphires?
Montana sapphires are natural sapphires found in the state of Montana, mainly in regions like Rock Creek, Yogo Gulch, and the Missouri River. These stones come in a range of hues, often from icy blues and seafoam greens to soft lavenders and warm teals.
Why We Work With Montana Sapphires
- Traceability and Transparency
Most Montana sapphires are mined using ethical labor and environmentally conscious practices. It's important to use that we can trace these stones from mine to market, meaning we know where your gem came from.
- Lower Carbon Footprint
These sapphires are mined right here in the U.S., so there’s no need for international shipping or heavy fuel usage.
- Minimal Impact Mining
Rock Creek, one of the primary mining areas, uses methods that disturb the earth as little as possible. These are mostly alluvial deposits (the sapphires are found in river gravel, not deep underground), so miners don’t need to blast or dig excessively.
FAQ's from custom clients:
- Are Montana sapphires real sapphires?
Yes! They’re 100% natural sapphires, made of corundum just like sapphires from Sri Lanka or Madagascar. They’re just uniquely American-grown.
- Are they good for engagement rings and everyday wear?
Absolutely. Sapphires rank 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, where diamonds rank a 10 out of 10. This makes them an excellent, durable choice for everyday wear. Many of our clients choose them for their beauty and symbolic meaning of loyalty and wisdom.
- Are all Montana sapphires blue?
You’ll find greens, teals, purples, yellows, and even color-shifting stones. They can be whatever color you want them to be!
- Are they ethical?
While no mining is completely impact-free, Montana sapphires are widely considered one of the most ethical gemstone options available. Small-scale mining operations and U.S. labor laws help ensure better practices compared to many international sources.
- Are they expensive?
Montana sapphires can be pretty affordable compared to fine sapphires from other regions. Their price varies by color and clarity, but many couples find they can get a unique, ethically sourced stone within their budget.
